Underwriter

An individual working for an insurance company who is responsible for assessing an applicant’s eligibility for an insurance policy, approves applications, and determines the cost of their plan.

Uncompensated Care

Medical services from a provider of any sort (doctor, hospital, specialist) that does not get paid for. Care is uncompensated typically when an individual does not have insurance and does not have the financial means to pay for health services.

Usual, Customary, and Reasonable (UCR)Expenses

Also referred to as covered expenses, this is an amount owed by the patient for medically necessary or doctor recommended health care services.
